QOTW: Opening Free Agency

Question of the Week: I run a dynasty league and was under the impression that we would be able to pick up free agents during the off season. When I try to it says the player is locked and “the draft has not taken place yet”…. We keep our entire rosters and will only hold a rookie draft a few weeks before the actual NFL regular season begins. Why won’t it let us pick up free agents? How can I bypass this?

Answer: To open up free agency prior to your draft in a keeper league, you will need to go to League Settings > Edit Rosters, and select “These are complete rosters” in the bottom Keeper Options section. This will open up the player pool and you can adjust your waiver wire rules as needed. If you want your waiver system to be utilized, make sure the League Settings > Edit Transaction Rules “Lock Free Agents During Preseason” setting is set to Yes.

When you are ready to draft, you will go back to League Settings > Edit Rosters, and select “These are complete rosters but still draft this season” in order to start setting up your draft.

One thing to keep in mind is that when you select “These are the complete rosters,” the system thinks you have already drafted, and you won’t be able to see 2016 picks. They will be retained and you will see them again when you switch to the “These are complete rosters but still draft this season” setting.
